When Should You Buy a New Pair of Prescription Eyeglasses?

Posted by Danielwalters.com on 14th Aug 2017

Sadly, your favorite pair of eyeglasses will not last you a lifetime. You could get the sturdiest or buy the most expensive frames in the market but you’d still have to change them at some point. The way you take good care of your eyeglasses matter but you have to know when to keep and when to toss.

The question is, how do you know when it’s time to change your eyeglasses?

Here are the answers:

1. Change of Prescription

It goes without saying that outdated prescription lenses are bad for your vision. The lenses you wear must always match your current prescription to protect your eyes from further damage. That is why you need to get new eyeglasses every time your prescription changes.

The most common effect of wearing outdated or expired lenses is blurred vision. This is when your sight loses focus which results to the inability to read small letters and see far away objects. You may often find yourself squinting while working on the computer or watching TV even when you’re wearing your glasses. Eye strain is also very common for people wearing outdated prescription lenses. Eyestrain occurs when your eyes feel fatigued which could be uncomfortable and painful. This comes with recurring headache, too. Other signs to watch out for are sudden flashes, loss of clarity, and double vision.

2.Damage

Damaged eyeglasses need to be replaced. Lens scratches can negatively affect your visual performance. Cracked lenses are not safe for wearing. Frames that have come loose after several months of wearing could get very uncomfortable and annoying as it will constantly slide off your nose. Also, you will know your eyeglasses need to retire when the nose pads turn a yellowish shade.

3. Eyeglasses are more than one year old

Your prescription could change overtime, and unless the effects are drastic because of some major eye health issue, it may go unnoticed because of its slow and gradual adjustment. Eye doctors recommend to have your eyes checked at least once a year to see if your prescription has changed. The American Optometric Association suggests that children and adults must come in for regular checkup once a year or at least once every two years.

Senior adults over 60 years old and people with risk factors, on the other hand, will have to visit their eye doctor every year.

That is just the general rule when it comes to eye exams. You still have to follow your optometrist’s specific orders or instructions for the sake of your eye health.
