What To Know When Asking For Your Prescription!

Posted by danielwalters.com on 14th Mar 2017

When buying eyeglasses off of our website you are going to need to enter your prescription information and for this you will obviously need to know what your prescription is. The good part of this is that your eye doctor is required by law to give you your prescription information but the bad part is that many of them will attempt to trick you into not knowing it so you have to buy glasses from their doctor’s office. Don’t let this sway you though because you already paid for your prescription which means that you have a right to know what it is.

When you call your doctor’s office and ask for it they may either send it to you in the mail, ask you to come into the office, or read it over the phone. They might try to tell you that they are not allowed to release it to you over the phone and that is simply untrue. They are completely legally allowed to release that information and it is simply a ploy to try and delay you buying from anywhere else.

When asking for your prescription you should also ask for your ADD (if you need bifocals) and your sphere, axis, and cylinder (if you have astigmatism). It also never hurts to ask for your pupillary distance but, depending on your state, they are not legally required to release that information to you.

You also do not have to pay extra to receive your prescription no matter how many times you have asked for it. They might try to tell you that they charge a fee after the first time but it is legally your information and they cannot charge you money for it. This is yet another scam to try and convince you that it is simply easier to buy your eyeglasses from them!

When receiving your prescription, your doctor may ask you to sign a waiver which absolves them of all responsibility in the event that something happens with the glasses bought elsewhere. This is both illegal and unethical and you absolutely do not have to sign any sort of waiver. This is a tactic which scares you into thinking that you should not buy from anywhere but from them.

Lastly, your prescription does not expire and no matter what it can still be used. However, it is still recommended that you get an annual eye examination every year to make sure that you don’t need a new prescription. If they try to tell you that then you can simply say that you will make sure that you don’t need a new prescription at next year’s exam.

The main thing to remember is that you have the legal right to your eyeglasses prescription no matter what your eye doctor may tell you. Don’t let them scare you into paying a ton more than you would somewhere like DanielWalters.Com for the same pair of eyeglasses. As long as you know your rights and stick to your guns you will be fine!
