The Right Way to Clean Your Eyeglasses
Posted by Danielwalters.com on 11th Aug 2017
A lot of people prefer eyeglasses over contact lenses because they are extremely low-maintenance. There isn’t much to do when it comes to cleaning your glasses and this saves a lot of time and effort. However, you still have to know how to wash, wipe, and polish them properly.
Here are some tips on how to clean your glasses the right way:
1. Wash your hands thoroughly and dry them completely. Before
you start cleaning your eyeglasses, you have to make sure that your hands are dirt-
and oil-free. Use soap with lather and dry your hands with lint-free towel.
2. After washing your hands, hold your eyeglasses under gentle flowing tap water in lukewarm temperature. Make sure that the water is not hot enough to ruin your lens coating. Doing this will remove dirt, dust and other debris stuck in the corners of your glasses. These elements pose the risk of scratching the lenses so you have to be careful when dealing with them.
3. Wash the lenses using regular dish-washing liquid free of oils and moisturizing agents. One small drop for every lens is sufficient. Dish-washing liquids are very concentrated so you don’t have to pour a lot of it to clean a pair of glasses.

4. Carefully rub your fingers on both sides of the lenses as well as on all the other parts of the frame including the nose bridge, nose pads, temples, and ear piece. Don’t forget to check the edges of your glasses especially the part where the lenses and frames meet. It is where most dust, oil, and other dirt can gather up. Be very gentle in doing the entire process. Some glasses are quite fragile. A little too much force can break it especially if you have strong, large hands. Also, achieve the balance between a firm and easy grip. Soap can make the glasses slippery and you do not want to drop your eyeglasses especially the rimless type.
5. Rinse the soapy eyeglasses well. Make sure you wash away all the lather. You know when you’re done when you start feeling that your fingers don’t glide as easily on the surface as it did when you were rubbing it before. If you fail to rinse all of the dishwashing liquid, the lenses will surely smear once you try to dry them.
6. Now it’s time to dry the lenses. You can use a dish towel or a cotton towel as long as it’s clean and lint-free. Otherwise, you will have to clean your glasses again.
Then again, you don’t always have to wash your eyeglasses with water. If you’re trying to get rid of a tiny smudge, you can also use a microfiber cloth or a pre-moistened disposable lens cleaning wipes specially formulated for eyeglasses. These are often sold in optical stores.
You also have the option to have your glasses professionally cleaned. An ultrasonic cleaning device will be able to take care of the most difficult spots to clean. Old, yellowish nose pads can also be replaced by new ones to make your eyeglasses look neat and brand new.
Now here are some of the things you shouldn’t do when it comes to cleaning your glasses:
Do not use your shirt especially the printed ones. This habit can easily result to a lot of lens scratches. Using strong glass cleaners is also not advisable. This type of solution can damage your lens coating. Tissue paper or paper towels are also a bad idea. Using these to wipe your glasses will only result to more smudge and will leave you with lenses full of lint.
Glasses that are well-taken care of will last much longer. Unfortunately at some point, you still have to replace your frames maybe because of an accident or perhaps a change in prescription.
