Nose Pads - Different Shapes and Materials
Posted by Danielwalters.com on 17th Sep 2017
Nose pads are those two tiny support pieces attached somewhere near the nose bridge that helps keep your glasses in its proper position. It prevents the frames from sliding off your nose which is especially helpful for people with a low nose bridge. They provide comfort and a snug fit. Aside from these functions, nose pads also give certain types of eye wear models a classic, vintage look.
Nose pads come in many shapes and sizes. They are also made of different materials. To familiarize you with its different characteristics, here are some information worthy of read.
Shape
Nose pads for both plastic frames and metal frames come in different shapes such as D-shaped, oval, round (“button”) and teardrop. Other examples are soft-wing, saddle-bridge, and strap-bridge nose pads. The shape of the nose pads depend on the eyeglass manufacturers, because of two main reasons. The first is that the shape helps distribute the weight of the eye wear frame over your nasal area to provide comfort. The second reason is that the shape of the nose pad should complement the look and contours of an eyeglass frame to give your spectacles an overall appealing look.

Material
The most common materials used for making nose pads are silicone, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polycarbonate (PC). Other materials which are less commonly used are rubber, glass, ceramic, glass, and titanium.
Silicone
Nose pads composed of soft silicone material conform to the shape of where it makes contact on your skin, providing a pliable fit and an even weight distribution on your face.

Polycarbonate
PC nose pads are made of hard plastic material. They are very lightweight because of their ultra-thin design. It is one of the most durable type of nose pad material. They degrade very slowly because of their porous-resistant properties.
Polyvinyl Chloride
PVC nose pads are also made of plastic material. Like other nose pads, they provide comfort and support to make glasses easier to wear. Polycarbonate nose pads are soft. Regardless of material composition, improper adjustment of the nose pads causes the weight of the eyeglass frame to leave indentations on the skin due to pressure.
