4 Ways That You Can Reduce Eyestrain

Posted by Danielwalters.com on 24th Mar 2017

These days it is nearly impossible to stay off of technology completely. In fact, the average American adult spends upwards of eight hours a day on electronics between work, school, and entertainment. People who spend a lot of time on their computer or cell phones usually suffer from some degree of eyestrain. Lucky for those of us who don't want to or can't cut down on electronic time, there are ways that you can reduce the strain on your eyes.

1. Wear Computer Glasses

You can either buy glasses that have are specifically meant to protect your eyes from blue light or you can get your existing eyeglasses modified to have features like anti-reflective, UV protection, and blue light filter which will improve contrast. Wearing these will allow you to spend more time on the computer without the extensive eyestrain.

2. Take Breaks Frequently

Taking breaks can not only prevent eyestrain but also reduces dryness, irritation, and blurry vision. There is a rule that you can follow called the 20-20-20 rule that says that every 20 minutes you should take a 20 second break to look at something 20 feet away. This will give your eyes a break and allow them to look at something that isn't so close.

3. Adjust Your Computer Settings

Lowering the brightness on your computer can do a great deal for your eyestrain. The same goes for using a larger text and tinkering with the contrast until you find what feels comfortable for you! This is something that everyone should do regardless of whether or not you work or do school on your computer but it is absolutely crucial for those who do.

4. Get Your Eyes Checked Annually

This is one of the most important steps in maintaining healthy eyes and avoiding eyestrain. An annual eye exam can detect eye problems early and your eye doctor can make changes that will fix the problem. You should tell your eye doctor about the amount of time you spend on electronics and your eyestrain and they can work with you to fix the problem.
